Realism and Naturalism

The Realist and Naturalist playwrights revolted against traditional forms of nineteenth-century theater. Tired of conventional forms such as melodrama and the well-made play, these dramatists put Zola's theories into practice as they searched for a representation of drama that was more "true to life." Ibsen, Chekhov, Shaw and early Strindberg are the central practitioners of this movement.
