A study of Western theater, from its origins in the Greek dramatists to the modern period. The first semester focuses on Classical drama: Greek and Roman drama, Renaissance Itay and England, Neoclassical French and Golden Age Spain. This is a survey course, based on lecture and group discussion, that broadly covers the Western dramatic literary tradition and theater history emphasizing how public art transforms itself radically to correspond to different cultural situations. Reading will consist mainly of plays along with a small amount of background materials.
