Fin de Siecle:

At the end of the 19th century, French, English and American art began to break free of Victorian conventions. The literature and theatrical works of the 1890s were characterized by a sense of lassitude and boredom and a rejection of societal norms. Works of the fin de siecle were inspired by Decadence and the Aesthetic Movement, used some realistic elements, and often featured apocalyptic images.

Arthur Schnitzler's apocalyptic Vienna in Hands Around is an excellent example of fin de siecle drama.

Major Fin de Siecle Figures:
Aesthetics and Decadence: Oscar Wilde
Realism: George Bernard Shaw
French Symbolists: Mallarme and Baudelaire
