Richard Parkes Bonington (1802-1828)

Despite his early death this precocious artist left an impressive body of paintings; of special merit are the land and seascapes. Besides the pictures listed below, two other paintings on Shakespeare are recorded, both depicting scenes from Henry VIII: Henry VIII and Cardinal Wolsey Greeting the Spanish Ambassor and Queen Katherine. Both are now listed among Bonington's missing works.

The two major studies of Bonington and his work are Patrick Noon, Richard Parkes Bonington: "On the Pleasure of Painting" (New Haven: Yale University Press, 1991) and Malcolm Cormick, Bonington (New York: Cambridge University Press, 1989).
