Charles Cattermole. Scenes from the Life of Shakespeare.

Drawing from the original watercolor, approximately 23.5 X 13 inches. The Shakespeare Memorial Theatre, Stratford-upon-Avon.

Cattermole painted thirteen watercolors (all approximately 23.5 X 13 inches) illustrating Shakespeare's life from his christening to his death. The series was commissioned by William Ryland to accompany a lecture on Shakespeare's life, and the paintings were often reproduced as prints, drawings and postcards. Ryland bequeathed the set of watercolors to the Shakespeare Memorial Theatre at Stratford in 1901. The scene reproduced here is No. 8, "Shakespeare Acting Before Queen Elizabeth."
