Wheatley, a popular painter in his time, entered the schools of the Royal Academy in 1769 and first exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1778. He contributed paintings to Macklin's Poets' Gallery, Woodmason's Irish Shakespeare Gallery, and Bowyer's Historical Gallery, as well as Boydell's Shakespeare Gallery.
